Microchip for Pet Identification

The placement of a microchip is one of the best ways to permanently identify the ownership of your pet. It is useful if your pet becomes lost, and is found without an identifying collar which can frequently slip off or contain out-dated information. The procedure involves placing a small electronic chip the size of a grain of rice, using a needle underneath the skin between the shoulder blades. This is most commonly done when your pet is spayed or neutered and under general anesthesia, but can also be done at any other time.

Almost all veterinary clinics, humane societies, and animal shelters have a scanner capable of reading the unique number stored within the microchip. That number is used to retrieve your information so that you may be contacted without delay.

If your pet has a microchip, make sure to always keep your contact information on file up to date. In addition to the microchip, we recommend that your pet also wear a collar with identification at all times.
